New urbanization is an inherent requirement for China to adapt to the economic development in the new era.One of its important strategic goals is to release the consumption potential of domestic residents. The new urbanization can drive the increase of residents ’ consumption by increasing residents ’ income, changing consumption habits and improving income distribution.Based on this, this paper takes the actual effect of new urbanization driving residents ’ consumption and the mechanism of new urbanization affecting residents ’ consumption as the core issues of this paper. At the same time,it examines the income effect and distribution effect of new urbanization driving residents ’ consumption from the perspective of income, and combines the reality of China ’s current urban-rural dual structure to analyze whether there are differences between urban and rural areas and regions in the effect of new urbanization driving residents ’ consumption.Firstly, this paper analyzes the relevant literature at home and abroad, and expounds the concept of new urbanization and residents ’ consumption. At the same time,on the basis of relevant theories, this paper analyzes the mechanism of new urbanization promoting residents ’ consumption and puts forward research hypotheses. Then, the status quo of China ’s new urbanization and residents ’ consumption is analyzed vertically and horizontally. Before this, the entropy method is used to comprehensively measure the level of new urbanization by constructing a multi-dimensional comprehensive index evaluation system. Finally, according to the proposed research hypothesis, using China ’s provincial panel data from 2007 to 2021,the basic model regression is used to verify the impact of new urbanization on residents ’ consumption and the differences between urban and rural areas. The mediating effect model is used to analyze the income effect and distribution effect of new urbanization on residents ’ consumption, and through the moderating effect model and group regression, the relevant mechanism of new urbanization affecting residents ’ consumption is further tested. After theoretical analysis, current situation analysis and empirical analysis, the conclusion of this paper is drawn : there are significant differences between the new urbanization level and the consumption level of residents in different regions, and the overall distribution is ’ high in the east and low in the west ’;the new urbanization has a significant positive effect on residents ’ consumption, which has a stronger effect on rural residents ’ consumption, central and western residents ’ consumption and low-income residents ’consumption. From the perspective of income, improving residents ’ income is still the core of driving residents ’ consumption, but influenced by the development reality of urban-rural dual structure, the role of promoting residents ’ consumption through distribution effect needs to be strengthened. In view of this, this paper puts forward the following policy recommendations : improve the income level of residents, especially rural residents;coordinate urban and rural development, narrow the income gap;deepening the linkage reform of the household registration social security system;further optimize the industrial structure.
