In recent years, our country’s import and export trade volume ranks first in the world, and export is one of the three carriages that pull our country’s economic growth. At the same time, how to keep the sustained growth of import and export has become an important issue.China’s trade pattern has always been export-oriented,our country has long been engaged in the international division of Labor in the low-end links;on the other hand, the rise of trade protectionism has intensified the trade friction between our country and some major trading countries. In this context, our export structure and export competitiveness need to be optimized. The report to the 20 th NPC proposed how to promote high-level foreign development, accelerate the building of a strong trading nation, emphasize “Independent innovation” and “High-quality development”,and how to improve the quality of our export products, let the product quality become our country in the international market competition sharp weapon. The possible innovations of this paper include : Empirical analysis on the mechanism of import intermediate affecting export product quality, including diversification effect, quality transfer effect and technology spillover effect; In the past, there are few studies on the factors that influence the quality of export products by setting up independent innovation as an intermediary variable,so this paper explores the role of independent innovation as an intermediate channel. On the basis of the fixed effect model of empirical research. In the empirical analysis, using the twostep matching method of Yu and Tian(2012)for reference to get the final data, this paper calculates the export product quality from the enterprise level based on the above data, based on the panel data, this paper studies the relationship between the import volume of intermediate goods and the quality of export products, constructs the instrumental variables for the potential endogenous problems, and uses two-stage GMM and LIMI to make regression, this paper makes an empirical analysis on the diversification effect, the quality transfer effect and the technology spillover effect, and analyzes the heterogeneity from the industry category, the import amount of intermediate goods and the source country of intermediate goods. In addition, this paper also set up independent innovation as intermediary variable, and analyzed the indirect effect of independent innovation as intermediate channel on the quality of export products. The empirical results show that imported intermediate products play an important role in improving export quality, and independent innovation can play a positive intermediary role. The country of origin of imports and the industries in different technology categories, compared with low technology content, low import value of intermediate goods and non-OECD countries as the source of imports, firms in high-tech industries, the volume of imports of high-intermediate goods and the quality of exports from OECD countries are more vulnerable to imports of intermediate goods. The conclusions are still robust after considering the data sample and endogenesis. Then in the end,we give three suggestions: optimizing the import structure of intermediate goods, deepening the reform of free trade, improving the indigenous enterprises’ independent innovation ability.
