Since the 20th century, with the rapid development of communication technology and transnational transportation, internationalization strategy has gradually become an important strategic choice for enterprises.Different from the traditional choice of gradual internationalization, more and more enterprises start to choose to enter the international market from the very beginning, which is called "international new ventures".In recent years, international start-ups have attracted extensive attention from scholars. However, most of the current studies on international start-ups focus on the micro perspective, and there are few studies on the relationship between macro institutions and international start-ups.Some studies have pointed out that intellectual property protection is one of the main factors affecting the innovation and performance of international start-ups.Therefore,the central question of this study is proposed: how does intellectual property protection affect the independent innovation and performance of international new enterprises?According to the literature on IPR enforcement, innovation, and internationalization,we predict that IPR enforcement directly and indirectly(via innovation speed and innovation quality)impacts firm performance of INVs,and international intensity(INT)moderates the indirect effects.Based on both primary data and secondary data, the empirical results indicate that IPR enforcement promotes firm performance. In addition, innovation speed and innovation quality partially mediate the relationship between IPR enforcement and firm performance. Moreover, the relationship between IPR enforcement and innovation quality is weakened with high levels of INT.Theoretical contributions, practical implications, limitations, and future research avenues are discussed.
