As the main means to bring up the students with ideological and political qualities represented by political thought, ideological awareness, moral characters, and healthy psychology besides knowledge and capacities in their own specific fields, ideological and political education plays a decisive role in cultivating integrated development and high quality talents with good characters and professional competences. It also becomes an indispensable part of the process to’cultivate people’in universities. Therefore, in order to gain their advantages of human resources in the global talent competition, most of countries in the world well emphasize the importance of ideological and political education to the students with its center on political qualities education. Through exploring the universal rules in ideological and political education, each country aims to improve the students’ identities on the mainstream ideology and comprehensive capacities and maximally realizes the effectiveness of ideological and political education in universities.As the two main countries to cultivate innovative talents for the whole world, China and the U.S.A both employ ideological and political education as a significant way to improve the comprehensive qualities and especially the ideological and political qualities of college students. However, implements in the two countries present different idiosyncrasies. Through comparative studies on historical trajectories, teaching thought, training objectives, educational contents, curriculum designs, practical ways, and educational methods of ideological and political education in universities between China and the U.S.A, this dissertation explores the universal and particular principles, as well as conducts reflections on the differences and similarities between two countries from the perspectives of essential characters, inherent principles, and political culture of ideological and political education. It is hoped to help critically learning plausible experience from the U.S.A and offer intellectual resources for promoting effectiveness of ideological and political education in China.Through phrasal divisions of evolutional development of ideological and political education in Chinese and American universities, it introduces the historical trajectories, evolutional principles, and characteristics presented in the whole process between them. It comes up with similarities when ideological and political education aims to realize its political and educational functions and comply with educational principles However, due to the distinguished characters of historical development, ideological and political education in two countries expresses differences.Through analyses of teaching thought and training objectives of ideological and political education in Chinese and American universities, it points out the inherent relations between teaching thought and training objectives. It also analyzes the political and comprehensive meanings of training objectives in the two countries in terms of the sociopoliticizational process of human beings. Besides, it also presents the different value orientations in training objectives from the ideological perspective in the two countries.Through comparative studies on educational contents and curriculum designs of ideological and political education in China and the U.S.A, it argues that the requirement to be comprehensive development of human beings determines the similarities in components and structures of educational contents and curriculum designs. It also has differences between the two countries as they possess different national institutions and educational strategies.Through analyses and comparisons of practical ways and educational methods of ideological and political education in China and the U.S.A, it reveals that the formulation principles of human moral development and advantages of educational methodological systems determine that the two countries share similarities on diversity and scientific characters. Also, differences in historical culture and educational thought and ideas make the two countries show their specifications.On the basis of systematically analyzing common and different principles and their causes of university ideological and political education in China and the U.S.A, this dissertation summarizes their advantages and disadvantages. By holding the commitments to the basic framework of Chinese socialist political institutions and realize the general aim of university ideological and political education, it critically analyzes, learns, and absorbs the plausible experience of ideological and political education in American universities. Finally, it proposes to reflections and recommendations on promoting the effectiveness of university ideological and political education in China by means of the following efforts:maintaining the dominance of ideological and political education in universities, enhancing the integration between ideological and political education and professional education, enlarging the ideological and political functions of humanities and social sciences education, improving the effects of ideological and political education by utilizing modem information technologies, and thus cultivating complete characters of students that are well fitting to the emerging features of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
