The metallographic sample cutting machine is mainly used to cut the metallographic sample and lay off or make slot in all kinds of metal materials, which is widely used in machinery, metallurgy, automobile, aviation and tool and die etc. With the development of science and technology in our country, the machine will develop with the development of industry. Cutting the metallographic sample is one important link of metallographic sample preparation. The inevitable trend of the cutting machine is to get high quality cutting sample and high automation.According to some special requirements of cutting large diameter roller for one roller factory, This article has studied and designed the mechanical mechanism of cutting machine. Mechano-electronic technique has been adopted to design the control system of cutting machine, and realize the diversification and humanization of cutting mode.Mechanical structure design of the large roller metallographic sample cutting machine mainly includes body, transmission device, feed mechanism, fixture and cooling system. This paper also has discussed character of each part in detail.The control system of the large roller metallographic sample cutting machine take OMRON CP1H PLC as the control core, and take Eview MT508S touch screen as display terminal, they communicate with serial communication. PLC mainly complete data processing and control tasks, touch screen complete parameter setting and display. Touch screen sends command to PLC by serial port. According to the cutting mode and parameter that the users has setted, PLC controls one alternating current motor and three stepping motor, make working table, cantilever and grinding disk move coordinately, then finish cutting task. The system uses travel switch to examine position, and ensure the safety of cutting process. By using OMRON E6B2-CWZ6C incremental encoder and the speed count unit of the CP1H together to examine the feed rate of the grinding disk and the pre-and post travel distance of the table,to achieve the precise control of the interception of the sample.This article designs display and input module of touch screen, which provide one practical, beautiful, safe and reliable man-machine interface for PLC. Frequency conversion timing technology was adopted to control the asynchronism motor. Based on USS Protocol, PLC control the inverter through RS485 serial-port communication of them, including the inverter's start-stop, frequency settings, and operating parameters modified. To set up parameters of the inverter consider the communication and control requirements. The control system of the cutting machine that has designed in this paper has tow kinds of workings: automatic operation and manual operation. It has three kinds of cutting modes: cut off work piece once; cut off work piece with advancing three steps and retreating one step; cut off work piece layer by layer. The cutting ability of the cutting machine was enhanced, so that cutting machine can cut off various sizes of rollers efficiently.When the mechanical and control system software and hardware design is completed, the cutting machine was installed and tested and the issues arising was finished, at the same time anti-interference measures of the cutting machine were studied.
