This paper reviewed the studies of the chemical constituents in the Phellodendron Rupr. and the pharmacological action and clinical use of the main constituent- berberin.16 compounds were isolated from the bark of Phellodendron chinense Schnied. by using open-column chromatography, preparative TLC and HPLC methods et al.On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, 12 compounds were identified as: ferulic acid (1), obaculactone (2), adenosine (3), phellodendrine (4), noroxyhydrastinine (5), oxyberberine (6) rugosinone (7), jatrorrhizine (8), berbithine (9), 3-acetyl-3, 4-dihydro-5, 6-dimethoxy-2(1)H-benzo[c]pyranone (10), anhydroberberilic acid (11), palmatine (12). Among them, compound (10) was a novel compound and compounds (1), (3), (5), (6), (7), (9), (11) were isolated from this genus for the first time. The effects of the alkaline aqueous extract and the crude quaternary alkaloids from Phellodendron chinense Schneid. on renal asthenia yang rats were studied. Preliminary experimental results showed that both parts have improve activity.
