OBJECTIVES: To predict duration of azotemia and distinguish acute renal failure ( ARF ) clinically from chronic renal failure (CRF) by measuring the concentration of hair creatinine ( Hcr ) and analysing the correlation between Hcr and serum creatinine (Scr) in 59 patients with acute renal failure (ARF) and 64 patients with chronic renal failure(CRF) .METHODS: Hcr soak was made by carbonizing hair samples with sulphuric acid and neutralizing with sodium hydroxide. The creatinine concentration was measured by Olympas - 2700 automatic biochemistry analysis meter. The correlativity was analysed between the Hcr in different hair section (10 - 20mm,20 - 30mm,30 - 40mm,40 -50mm) and average of Scr in different period ( 1 - 2,2 - 3, 3 - 4, 4 - 5month period ) before cutting hair samples. RESULTS: They were exhibited positive correlativity between Her of 10 - 20mm section and Scr in 1 - 2 monthperiod before cutting hair samples, and between Hcr of 20 - 30 mm,30 - 40mm and 40 - 50mm section and Scr in 2 - 3month , 3 - 4 month, 4 - 5 month, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Hcr can predict previous Scr and distinguish clinically acute renal failure (ARF) from chronic renal failure (CRF) .
