To put into practice the quality—oriented education which features initiative spirit and practical skills, the key is to alter students' means of learning. The fundamental question that school education needs to attach importance to is to help our students to develop their own way of learning. Under the current teaching facilities, students tend to learn things by rote or on a superficial level so that they could only put what they have learnt into simple or shallow use. Students are instilled with knowledge in a passive way. However, research study is a modern mode of learning with students as the nucleus of teaching. This new mode of learning is just being developed as we step into a highly—civilized, highly-synthesized and highly—informed society. The concept of geographical research study has come out of it and been based on it. This thesis deals with the implementation of research study in geography which may better promote students' inventiveness and improve their practical skills. In the light of this, this thesis further looks into the definition and characteristics of geographical research study in Middle School by coupling with relevant theories in education and psychology, investigating geographical teaching reality in middle schools in China and absorbing the findings of research study available in china and abroad; analyzes the objectives and content of geographical research study; illustrates general process of how to carry out geographical research study in practice; and clearly states the content and gauge of evaluation on how students get along with it. Geographical research study puts emphasis on guiding students to care about nature, society and life, highlights the importance of combining theory with practices, and pays much attention to tap and utilize the local and school teaching resources, to exert the prominent role of geography in school education, which is fundamental to the effective administration of geographical research study. Geographical study regards students as the nucleus of teaching; meanwhile, it also underlines the guidance of teacher. This thesis examines teaching experiments with geographical research study, associates with classical cases, and finally draws a conclusion. It summarizes the mode of how to carry out geographical research study and some existing problems as well, and performs some beneficial exploration in students' inventiveness, practical skills and strategic development in the course of geographical research study.
