As context plays an important role in language communication, context construction is one part which can’t be ignored for Chinese teaching and the compilation of textbooks. Context construction should be the focus of listening and speaking materials development, it is related to if the student can understand text contents correctly and express their views accurately. What’s more, it helps students turn their language knowledge to the social language ability. In this level, context is an important factor when we evaluate a textbook.This dissertation selected the textbook called Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking Course as the study object, trying to find the problems about the context design in the book. Combing the theories of textbooks compilation, I made questionnaires and interviews to the textbook’s users as well as the potential users to find out the requirements of students about the context setting in textbooks, and investigate how the textbook is used. At last, summarizing the problems in chapter context, situational context and cultural context, some strategies will be given.I do hope the preliminary exploration and attempt for the construction of context in Chinese listening and speaking textbooks is helpful for the textbooks development.
