Study Of The Compilation And Design Of The Atlas Of Chinese Coastal Ports

China has number many of coastal port, but most people only remember the names or the images of these ports. In order to meet the need of shipping, port, engineering construction, research,the aquatic department and the people found of ocean knowledge,we edit and publish the atlas of Chinese coastal potrs to introduce the condition of Chinese coastal ports in detail.With the forms of figures, texts, table, photos, and avigation photographys,the atlas tries to reflect the status of Chinese coastal potrs such as, overall scale, port composition, planning construction, environment around, throughout capacity, channel navigation capacity, the set of aids to navigation, distribution of dangers, fully systemly, and intuitively. The atlas shows the huge achievements of Chinese coastal ports and the mapping of results of Navy Marine, and it can be used as a reference to understand the general situation of Chinese coastal ports.This Atlas tries to get rid of chart’s patterns, and no longer pays more attention to aidsto navigation and navigational dangers when using colour and selecting content.Close to the subject, the atlas focuses on the presentation of the content such as port facilities and shipping capacity, and describes the contents such as the port stockyard and transportation capacity in detail. In part of the introductory maps, the Dem data is used to output images to take the place of layers tinting.In main part of the atlas, the relief is not expressed to make the elements in potr area clear and uncluttered.It is expatiated in this paper the basic methods and means of atlas compilation in four aspects:research on atlas design methods, design and compilation, content and format, and procedures of compilation. Based on present methods, softwares and techniques in compiling atlases, the author brings forward original understanding and creative ideas in art design, colors and symbols used in "Atlas of Coastal Ports in China" according to the requirements of its potential users by virtue of her professional mapping knowledge and practice.
