In the contemporary century, the international trades between countries have been booming up with the deepening development of economic globalization. The maritime transport takes an irreplaceable role as bridges and links in international trade, as the volume of cargo by maritime transport occupied over two-thirds of the total world’s cargo transport. As the involvement of China’s economics in world economics deepens and widens, maritime transport occupies more than 80% of the cargo in China’s exports. With the maritime transport of China growing, the demands for geographic atlas, that provides information on the port distribution, the transport lines and the route mileage between ports, are more than ever urgent by relevant government departments and companies in maritime industries. The management, research and practice with respects to maritime transport require cannot go forward without such a thematic atlas as background information.Combining the demand for geographic information products by world maritime transport, the thesis implemented both studies and practices on the compiling and designing of world shipping atlas. The main contents are:1. Based on the thematic contents of the atlas need to represent, the thesis discussed importance and current status of transpacific, atlantics and India Ocean route. The main ports in the three routes were also elaborated.2. The thesis analyzed the characteristics and principles of designing the atlas, with a focus on the application, purpose and basic structure in the overall design of the atlas.3. The thesis discussed the related contents of the overall design scheme and studied the landscape configuration, contents, compiling order, page setup, geometric basis and cartographic materials and so on.4. The thesis illustrated the scheme and methods of compiling the map of port distribution, which is an important component to the atlas. The principles and basic techniques were presented in details, as well as the plan and design of color printing. The contents of representation, principles and methods for generalization, symbol design and annotation were expounded exhaustively.5. The thesis implemented a series of design experiments of main types of maps included in the atlas. The research results focused on compiling and designing the atlas of world sea transport were successfully applied to practice, which derived multiple compiled maps of all types. The study in the presented thesis would provide meaningful reference for compiling and designing thematic atlas, which is of great significance to the development of techniques in atlas compilation and designation.
