Objective: Herbs-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy and starch-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy were selected to observe the efficacy on Substance P(SP),5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)and Vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP)in blood serum of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS)of spleen Qi-deficiency type. The aim of this research is to compair the influence to these brain-gut peptides, explain the pathogenesis of umbilical moxibustion in angle of brain-gut peptides and provide laboratory evidence for curative effect. Methods: 45 patients with IBS of spleen deficiency type were selected, 23 in herbs-isolated group, and 22 in the other. ELISA method was adopted to detect SP,5-HT and VIP in patients' blood serum before or after treatment, and differences were compared. Results: After treatment, the differences of VIP were highly significant in both groups(P<0.01). The differences of 5-HT and SP were highly significant in herbs-isolated group(P<0.01), while significant in starch-isolated group(P<0.05). There were no significant differences of SP,5-HT,VIP between the two groups neither before or after threatment(P>0.05), but there was better downward trend in herbs-isolated group. Conclusion: Herbs-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy and starch-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy can both reduce the serum content of SP,5-HT and VIP significantly of patients with IBS of spleen Qi-deficiency type. Although the efficacy are not significantly different, there's better downward trend in herbs-isolated group. It may be one of the effect mechanism of umbilical moxibustion therapy and related to herbs. The conclusion remains to be confirmed by further study combined with samples from all research centers.
