They are many different types of soft soil in our country. The soft soil is widely anddistributed across our land. The mechanical property of soft soil is usually very poor, so thetreatment of soft soil ground often becomes the crucial procedure for the quality controlduring the construction of highways. Up to now, lots of data of geological investigation andground treatment in soft soil region has been accumulated in our country, this data is the basicsource for research on the characteristics of soft soil in different regions of China. By buildingthe geographic information system of soft soil distribution in China, we can manage andanalyze this data, and provide helpful information for road construction in soft soil region.This paper conducted a preliminary study on building the geographic information systemof soft soil distribution in China, and the main research contents include:Analyzing currentrelated research results of soft soil distribution, the study on the data content, data structure,function modules, interface structure, and the system development model was also explored.The following results are obtained:1. The basic content of spatial database for the system was determined. The spatialdatabase deposits the thematic maps related to soft soil distribution in China, which consist ofsome map layers, such as administrative regionalization of china, geomorphologic division,soft soil distribution, expressways network, geological exploration points and so on.2. The basic content of attribute database for the system was determined. The attributedatabase associated with spatial database, including two databases, namely the engineeringgeological characteristics and physical mechanical indexes of soft soil in different regionsdatabase, the ground treatment methods of expressways database.3. The functional modules and development model for the system was determined. Thefunctional modules were built through using the component-based development technique.
