【Objective】To investigate the content variation of serum zinc and the incidence of zincdeficiency in infants with diarrhea, improving their zinc status and the prevention level ofdiarrhea.【Methods】The final study cases of95infants diagnosed with diarrhea in department ofpediatrics, the first affiliated hospital of fujian medical university from January2010toOctober2012, and271infants with health physical examination in outpatient service in thesame period, the age of all infants is not more than3years old. Then2ml fasting venousblood was collected at early morning and serum was seperated by centrifugation. Usingcolorimetric method to measure serum zinc levels. All data were statistically analysed usingSPSS version13.0. A P value of <0.05was considered statistically significant.【Results】The level of serum zinc(x±s,μmol/L) was (19.64±2.82) μmol/L,(13.51±3.18)μmol/L,(14.11±3.06) μmol/L in control group, acute diarrhea, persistent diarrhea. and theincidence of zinc deficiency was0,12.98%,5.56%, respectively. The level of serum zinc inacute diarrhea, persistent diarrhea was significantly less than control group, the incidence ofzinc deficiency was significantly more than control group, and the difference was statisticallysignificant. The i serum zinc level and the incidence of zinc deficiency between children withacute diarrhea and persistent diarrhea was not statistically significant.【Conclusions】 Compared with control group, the level of serum zinc of infants withdiarrhea was significantly less, the incidence of zinc deficiency was significantly more. Butthe level of serum zinc and the incidence of zinc deficiency between infants with acutediarrhea group and persistent diarrhea group was not statistically significant. We can measureserum zinc routinely in children with diarrhea, guiding the reasonable zinc supplementation, and improving their zinc status and the prevention level of diarrhea. Regular blood zinccontent determination can be undertaken in infant diarrhea, and it can to guide clinical rationalzinc supplementation, help to improve the zinc nutritional status in children with diarrhea, raise the level of prevention and control in infant diarrhea.
