The problem of left-behind children has been existed for a long time in our country. Society and academic circle pay a lot of attention to their healthy growth, personality development, and academic performance. However, to left-behind children who are at the important growth stage, incomplete family structure and dysfunctional parents’role affect their acquisition of social adaptability.As a result, they may learned bad habits, developed unhealthy character, social maladjustment, and even anti-social behavior such as deviant behavior.This dissertation selects social adaptability of rural left-behind children in western china as research topic, discussing the current situation about left-behind children’s social adaptability in Luxian county Sichuan province including family adaptation, school adaptation, interpersonal adaptation and self-adaptation, analyses the influencing factors and puts forward some feasible suggestions and proposals, by using methods such as questionnaire, case interview, participant observation.The results show that left-behind children are weaker than normal children on the performance of social adaptability. On family adaptation, they do more housework but fewer things on their own. On academic adaptation, their performances are worse in learning motivation, attitude and process. On interpersonal adaptation, their emotion are more dependent on teacher, they are bad at getting along with their companion, and prone to distrust strangers. On self-adaptation, they have lower self-evaluation and higher mental elasticity, they are more diligent.The research suggests that self, family, school and society affect left-behind children’s social adaptability in varying degrees. Mental flexibility is the reason why there’s no significant difference between left-behind children’s social adaptability and normal children’s, and the reason why there’s difference between left-behind children’s social adaptability. As a consequence, good mental flexibility is the key to raise good social adaptability of left-behind children.
