The root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., is one of the most important ancient Chinese herbal drugs called Danshen. Danshen has been used primarily in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of coronary heart diseases, particularly angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. It has also been indicated for hemorrhage, dysmenorrhea, miscarriage, swelling, and insomnia as well as inflammatory diseases such as edema, arthritis, and endangitis. Chronic hepatitis and liver fibrosis have also been treated with Tanshen for centuries.By means of column chromatographic Silica gel, macroporous, Sephadex LH-20 and so on, the investigation on the chemical constituents of the injection of DANSHEN had resulted in the isolation and structure elucidation of fifteen compounds named:Neotanshin acid A(1), Neotanshin acid B (2), Neotanshinlactone A (3), Neotanshinlactone B (4), Neotanshinlactone C(5),2α,3α,19α,24-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid(6), 1-hydroxy-2-epipinoresinol-1-O-β-D-glucoside (7),2α,5β-Dihyroxybornane(8), Wogonin 7-O-Glucuronide Methyl Ester (9), ferulaic acid (10), isoferulic acid (11),β-sitosterol (12), oleanolic acid (13), protocatechuic acid (14), Daucosterol (15). In addition compounds 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 7 were seven new compounds, and compounds 8 and 9 are obtained for the first time from Salvia miltiorrhiza. The new compounds 3,4, and 5 showed cytotoxic activity against human lymphocytic leukemia cells (HL-60), the new compounds 5 showed cytotoxic activity against the cancer cell A549 and the new compounds 5 showed inhibition activity against N9 gitter cells to dilivery nitrogen monoxidum very well.
