Due to the fast development of science and technology and the increasing popularizing rate of computer and network, web-based English teaching is adopted by more and more colleges for English teaching. Undoubtedly, great progress has been made both theoretically and practically. Meanwhile whether from the perspective of theory or practice of web-based English teaching, many drawbacks in teaching practices have been identified and there is still a lot we need to do to improve English teaching.Based on the above context, this paper aims to develop an online autonomous learning based teaching model for college listening and speaking course, with the expectation that some inspirations and references can be offered to English teachers. Three questions are investigated in this paper:(1) what are the students’attitudes toward web-based listening and speaking course teaching? (2) whether the new teaching model can further improve students’ listening and oral proficiency? (3) whether students’autonomous learning ability has been improved after experiment? Both quantitative research (questionnaires and tests) and quality research (interviews and on-class observations) are employed in this research to examine the effectiveness of the present teaching model. Two classes of 76 freshmen are selected as the subjects of this experiment. Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) are adopted to analyze the collected data from questionnaires and tests. Findings through interviews and observation are summarized as well. Conclusions have been reached as followings. Firstly, students in general are positive to the application of web-based English teaching into listening and speaking course. Secondly, the present online learner autonomy based teaching model contributes students’acceptance and recognition of web-based English teaching. Thirdly, all the statistic analysis confirm the effectiveness of the present teaching model for improving students’autonomous learning ability. Fourthly, students can further improve their listening and oral proficiency with the designed teaching methods. From the interview and observation, the effects of the present designed model for college English speaking and listening course are further justified.
