English is the working language of the international shipping industry, and the marine English proficiency is an important part of the professional competence of the seafarers.Eighty percent of the marine accidents are caused by human factors, such as misunderstanding and poor communication,so the poor communicative English is a stumbling block restricting the Chinese crew members. However, the effect of current maritime English teaching is not effective, and students' ability in communication in English is very poor,“Dumb English”of seafarers can not satisfy the requirements of shipping enterprises. Therefore,it is urgent to make a research on maritime English communication, especially in Higher Vocational Colleges,in order to improve the professional English of students and to train highly-qualified seafarers.Based on the constructive learning theory and drawing on the advantages of several other teaching methods, such as task-based teaching approach,a new teaching model was developed for Higher Vocational Maritime English listening and speaking teaching. My purpose in the current study is to solve the following problems:(1)Will the new Maritime English listening and speaking teaching model motivate the students' interest in learning English?(2)Will the new teaching model improve the students' English?(3)Will the new teaching model improve the students' communicative competence? This study adopts the quantitative research method.I choose the questionnaire and teaching experiment as the research tools. The results show that the teaching model greatly influences the students' English achievements in exams, communicative competence and interest in learning maritime English listening and speaking, shown by the statistic analysis of the data from the teaching experiment and questionnaire.
