A Study On The Translator’s Subhectivity In The Translations Of Huang Di Nei Jing From The Perspective Of Hermenutics

Translators play a role in bridging different languages and transmitting information,thus their importance is self-evident.However,translators were often underestimated or even ignored in translating activities and studies in the past.It was not until the 1970s that the translator was out of the shadow of the author.The translator is able to choose translation materials,implement strategies and techniques at his own will.The translator has come in front of the stage,recreating the original text without going to the extremes.Therefore,the translator’s status has improved and people also have gained a deeper understanding of the culture of translation.Huang Di Nei Jing is the earliest medical classic in China,which contains wisdom and experience of ancient Chinese people in treating diseases.Huang Di Nei Jing involves physiology,pathology,therapy and diagnosis.It is rich in Chinese medicine knowledge and traditional Chinese philosophy.Therefore,the above factors will serve as a great test on the translator’s abilities.The translator’s understanding of the source text and how to translate it reflects the translator’s subjectivity.This paper selects the 1997 version of Huang Di Nei Jing translated by Wu Liansheng and Wu Qi and the 2008 version by Professor Li Zhaoguo.Based on George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory,the author analyzed the differences between the two versions by comparing them.It tries to explain how the two translations use and reflect the translator’s subjectivity in the four steps of Steiner’s theory,and further emphasizes the important role of translators in translation activities.This paper first introduced the source text of the object to be translated,the author of the original text and the two translators.Next,this paper briefly reviewed the development of the translator’s subjectivity,introducing the research status of the domestic and foreign research in this field,the main Ideas of the representative scholars and explained the concepts of the translation subject and the translator’s subjectivity in detail.Subsequently,based on the theoretical framework,this paper introduced the origins and development of hermeneutics and its influence on translation studies.This paper also focuses on George Steiner’s four-step translation theory and how the translator’s subjectivity is reflected in each step.Finally,this thesis makes a detailed and profound analysis of the English version of Huang Di Nei Jing translated by Wu Liansheng,Wu Qi and Li Zhaoguo.With a large number of examples and through paragraph comparisons,the paper showed the translator’s subjectivity in those four steps.At the same time,this paper chose traditional Chinese medicine as the research object,aiming to contribute to the improvement of the translation quality of traditional Chinese medicine classics through the combination of theory and practice and the dissemination of Chinese traditional culture.
