| The reports from the U.S.consulate in Northeast China in modern times involve agriculture, commerce, transportation, social status etc.of the Northeast. The source text of the thesis is excerpted from the Special Consular Reports, mainly about the economic development and social status of Dalny,Newchwang,Mukden,Harbin,Antung, and Manchuria from 1907 to 1920.It can help with laying bare the historical truth of American consulates in Northeast China, and track the changes of its policy towards China. From the perspective of Adaptation Theory, this translation report discusses the application of adaptation theory in translating English economic and trade archival texts from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax, ideology and culture and language style.Functioning as economic and trade text as well as archival text, the source text has dual-characteristics,that is,accurately and standard on the one hand and figurative on the other hand, which requires the translation should be both accurate and readable.Based on the text features and under the guidance of adaptation theory, this report adopts corresponding translation strategies from four aspects proposed by Verschueren:context-related components of adaptation, structural objects of adaptation, dynamic processes of adaptation and consciousness emergence of adaptation processes. The writer uses back translation method to deal with proper nouns;contextualization to words with multiple meaning;rewriting and replacing methods to compound words;parataxis, perspective transformation and reconstruction to syntactic problems;“literal translation+quotes+annotation” method to reconcile faithfulness and political stand, and substitution method to trace the historical events;structural addition and semantic addition. This translation practice verifies the efficiency of adaptation theory in translating economic and trade archival text and parallel texts, which is of great significance and value. |
