Under the background of global integration, the investment in the oil industry has been increased along with the continuous establishment of China’s multinational oil companies, resulting in the widespread attention to the translation of oil economic and trade texts. This report is based on the translation practice of Oil Power(Chapter Two)published by Petroleum Industry Press in March 2021.The chapter aims to introduce United States,Saudi Arabia, and Aramco oil company among which scramble for the power in Middle East oil politics. The source text is characteristic of compendious language and rigorous logic,so the particularity and specialization of its style requires higher standards for the translator.Guided by variation theory, this report analyzes the characteristics of the original text from lexical, syntactic and textual level respectively, explores the problems encountered in the translation process, and discusses the translation methods.Specifically, the lexical level handles terminologies and culture-loaded words by means of the 12 translation methods of variation theory;the syntactic level includes adjustment of sentence order, combination of short or loose sentences and conversation of sentence constituents to meats the reading habits of the target readers;the textual level mainly covers the genre structure and rhetorical structure to ensure the coherence and cohesion of the translation. It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for translators in the oil industry.
