A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Shape-Memory Alloys Handbook(Chapters 1 And 2)

In the past decade,great progress has been made in the basic research and application development of shape memory alloys such as Ni Ti based shape memory alloys,iron based shape memory alloys and copper based shape memory alloys.They have been widely used in the fields of aerospace,automobile industry and biomedicine.However,most books on the mechanism of shape memory alloys are written in English,which sets a higher threshold and makes them hard to understand.Therefore,the Chinese translation of such books is of high value and can provide ideal Chinese references for beginners to deepen their understanding of metal materials.Chapters 1 and 2 from the book Shape-memory Alloys Handbook are taken as the source text in this translation practice report.As a typical sci-tech text,a large number of metal materials terminologies are used in the source text,which also has long and difficult sentences with complex structure and many independent paragraphs.The linguistic features increase the difficulty of translation.In this report,the Variational Translation Theory is used in the translation process based on the linguistic features of source text.The application of adaptation techniques in terms of lexis,sentence structure and sentence boundary are also discussed.The adaptation techniques of adding,deleting and altering are used to optimize the lexis and make the translation information complete.Moreover,editing and integrating are adopted to adjust the sentence structure and make the translation orderly.Furthermore,integrating and narrating are provided to change the sentence boundary and make the translation coherent.In a word,the expression and the readability of the translation are improved through the translation techniques.In addition,the application of adaptation techniques demonstrates that the Variational Translation Theory has a strong applicability and plays a great guiding role in the Chinese translation of sci-tech texts.This translation report enriching the practical application of the Variational Translation Theory,and hoping to provide reference for the translation of sci-tech texts in the future.
