With the strengthening of the social awareness of environmental protection, people are starting to focus on indoor environmental quality, especially the indoor air pollution. There are a lot of factors that affect indoor air pollution, which is an important source of wood based panels and decorative materials, finishes, so study on VOC release from decorative wood-based panel plays an important role in research field. In this thesis, poplar particleboard as a substrate, the effect of decorative materials, hot-pressing technology, testing methods of VOC from overlaid particleboard were discussed. VOC release of the panels under different conditions and its influence factors were explored. VOC emission from overlaid particleboard was also predicted. In veneer surface coating process, TVOC release from panels with different finishing processes and its regulation were studied. The optimization of the coating process and the improvement in environment was summarized. Experimental results were obtained by statistical analysis, comprehensive comparison of the overall performance of the finished particleboard. Finally, VOC release from water-based varnish, alkyd varnish and nitrocellulose lacquer finishes attenuation from coating particleboard were compared. Finishes for the overlaid particleboard in interior with environmental-friendly and the scientific advice were provided. The main conclusions obtained from the research were as followed.1. Different finishes on the particleboard substrate can release VOC which is playing an effective role in the barrier. PP veneer material is the best barrier, which released of the lowest TVOC and formaldehyde. Followed by the melamine impregnated paper, veneer overlaid material. TVOC concentration release from water-based paint finishes particleboard were the most in the production process.2. In ash veneer finished particleboard,21 components was found among VOC before decoration. The main component was phthalate (2-ethylhexyl) ester. After finishing 15 components were determined. Ophenylenediamine Dicarboxylic acid (2-ethylhexyl) ester was low than 31.32% of before.3. To reduce VOC emissions from ash veneer overlaid particleboard, experiments on the adhesives, amount ratio of urea-formaldehyde to PVAc, hot pressing time, pressing temperature for the L9 (34) orthogonal experiment were carried. The best conditions were:amount of glue 100 g/m2, ratio of urea-formaldehyde glue to PVAc is 60:40, pressing time 3min, pressing temperature 100℃.4. In order to investigate TVOC release on different technique parameters of veneer overlaid particleboard, single factor experiments for the amount ratio of urea formaldehyde to PVAc, pressing temperature, amount of spread glue and veneer species were carry out. The results showed that:with the increasing of pressing temperature, the amount of spread glue, TVOC emission from veneer overlaid particleboard along with its initial released concentration was increased. The ratio of Urea-formaldehyde glue to the amount of PVAc is 70:30.5. Under different hot pressing conditions, VOC composition was analyzed for veneer overlaid particleboard. The result showed that:With increasing of glue volume, the amount of alkanes and aromatic compounds were increased, while terpenes and phthalate (2-ethylhexyl) ester were reduced. With increasing of hot temperature, the amount of alkanes and terpenes were decreased, while the relative content of aromatic compounds was increased. For pine veneer overlaid plywood, VOC released composition were including aromatic compound, a-pinene and other alkanes. Aromatic compounds were the largest among above. While it was the smallest component from ash veneer overlaid panel.6. From VOC monomer attenuation of ash veneer overlaid particleboard, it showed that: the amount of monomer released from veneer overlaid particleboard decreased with time. The same tendency as the amount of alkane monomer was. In early phrase, terpenoid release was at relatively low levels. The relative content of terpenes was increased with time. Relative content of aromatic substances released was stable.7. Significance analysis was adopted to analyze coating type, coating amount, coating method, storage time, moisture and other factors. The main factors which affect the TVOC emission of coating particleboard were as following:storage time, coating amount and coating type. Single factor experiments were employed to test the effect of the TVOC emission from coating particleboard of above-mentioned factors. Results indicated that:the more coating amount the more the TVOC emission increases and the relation between them was:TVOC3og> TVOC25g> TVOC2og> TVOCi5g> TVOC10g; the emission amount of TVOC was different as the different coating type which relativity was TVOC water-based paint a> TVOC water-based paint b> TVOC lacquer b> TVOClacquer a> TVOC alcohol Acid varnish; the less amount of TVOC emission, the longer of storage time during the unit time.8. By analyzing of attenuation test of water-based varnish, alkyd varnish and nitro varnish finishing particleboard, the results showed that the environmental performance of particleboard coated by water-based varnish was better than that of alkyd varnish and nitro varnish.
