| Urban is a main human habitat and the core of economic and social development. However, cities severely impact nature balance with their special metabolism process. Urbanization with high speed not only brings the economic and social prosperity but also brings the resource exhaustion, environmental pollution and ecological destroy. The arisen concept of sustainable development indicated the essential change of human development mode and enhanced to redesign the city development pattern Eco-city, characterized with healthy, effective and civilized, becomes a symbol of modern city and the model of sustainable cityThe structure and function of urban ecosystem, the mechanism of sustainable development, the connotation and principles of eco-city construction, and the sustainability construction and evaluation system were systemically studied in this paper. Furthermore, several characteristics of compound ecosystem of Hangzhou were analyzed and countermeasures for Hangzhou eco-city construction were suggested.The following main conclusions and creative ideas were obtained by detailed investigation and theoretical analysis:1.After the systemic analysis on the characteristics, structure and functions of urban ecosystem, urban ecosystem was proposed to be divided into two subsystems, eco-support system and production-consumption system. The urban ecological problems were essentially the disorder of structure, functions and process of urban ecosystem. The Logistic mechanism is the major mechanism for urban development. The connotation of urban sustainable development indicated that the basic way to keep urban sustainable development is to develop under the ecological carry capacity. A conceptual model and principles for eco-city construction was proposed according to the mechanism of urban sustainable development.2. Sustainability construction is the most important issue in eco-city construction. The paper redefined the concept of sustainability. Based on the prism structure of system development , a new model of sustainability construction were creativelycarried out, which was consisted of ecological support ability (base), development driver ability (motivity), social steady ability (insurance) and governmental control ability (core). The principles and theory structure for the indicator system of sustainable development evaluation were discussed. A new 3-dimension system framework, which constituted of development level, development harmony and development potential and involved population, environment, resources, economy, society and technology, was proposed in the paper.3. The urbanization ecological effects, sustainability and development defeats of Hangzhou were analyzed and discussed. The results showed urbanization not only enhanced economic and social development, but also inevitably brought with some negative ecological effects. Three main restriction factors, including shortage of nature resources, unbalance of regional development and low environmental effectiveness of industry, became main obstacles of Hangzhou sustainable development. Eight indicators, such as urban air quality, sewage treatment rate, and so on, were listed as key indicators in ecological construction. The strategy and objective framework, characterized with "health, energy, culture, harmony", were discussed. An economy-environment effective, environment-society health and society-economy justicial mechanism should be established to get the goals of eco-city.4.A Triple-Circle spatial framework of Hangzhou eco-city construction was put forward according to the spatial distribution of ecological sensitivity, ecosystem service and ecological carrying capacity. Under this framework, Hangzhou can be regionalized into ten ecological function areas.
