Facing with resources exhaustion, environmental deterioration and other issues, sustainable development is becoming an inevitable choice and an eternal theme to human survival and development. How to analyze and estimate the situation of sustainable development of one region in quantitative measurement and how to make "better city, better life", are still an advancing edge and focus on sustainable development research domain. Based on this consideration, using ecological footprint method which is prevailing in the world at present, the paper studied whether the regional development is sustainable from the angle of if mankind development and speed of releasing wasters exceed natural recycled ability and self-purification ability at present. It's a new method which is intuitional and simple for measuring sustainable development. Analysis on the ecological footprint can further understand the current situation and define the development trend of the region, so as to provide direction for the sustainable development of the region.Taking Hangzhou city as study area in this paper, the main contents are summed up as follow:(1) On the basis of summarizing the concept, characteristics and measurement methods of urban sustainable development, we expound the relevant theories and models of ecological footprint, and multi-angle sum up the strengths and weaknesses about assessment of sustainable development basing on ecological footprint model.(2) Ecological footprint model is used to empirical study in Hangzhou city from 2000 to 2007 in this paper, combinning with global ecological benchmark and ecological footprint index, the result shows that the stituation of Hangzhou city is unsustainable. However, ecological tension index, diversity, development capacity index, ecological footprint per ten thousand yuan GDP, energy ecological footprint per ten thousand yuan GDP and sustainable development index have indicated that the constitute of ecological footprint in Hangzhou city gradually tends to rationale. All these provide a new perspective for people to understand the the stituation of Hangzhou city. (3) According to Principal Component Analysis, we find that the main problems are population and GDP. Basing on the key factors to predict the ecological footprint of Hangzhou city, the results show that the ecological footprint of Hangzhou city still shows a rising trend by the average annual growth 0.4254hm2/cap in the next decade.(4) Based on those, the paper predicts that the size of population is 34,530,000 (2020), compared with other prediction models, it is very close to the average size——34,800,000 (2020), which indicates that ecological footprint not only as a measure of the extent of sustainable urban development, but also as an effective method to be used to predict urban population size. They can test with each other.(5) In accordance with the quantitative and qualitative analysis on the sutiation of Hangzhou city, points out some detailed measures.Ecological footprint model is applied to evaluate urban sustainable development basing on previous studies in this paper. Introduces global ecological benchmark, diversity, development capacity index, ecological footprint per ten thousand yuan GDP, sustainable development index and ecological footprint index to analyze the development of Hangzhou city and uses the classical method such as correlation analysis, factor analysis and principal component analysis to analyze the influencing factors of ecological footprint. The urban ecological footprint can be used to forecast population. This method can not only quantitatively predict the future development trend of urban, which combines qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis in a real sense, but also provide reference methods in measuring the state of development of the same region, which makes the research more practical significance and makes the ecological footprint theory in practice playing a positive role in further applications.
