Ethylene is the most important chemical product. The amount of ethylene production marks the development of the chemical industry of a country. The ethylene unit is a typical large production unit with a huge amount of equipment and spare parts. In this dissertation, equipment in an ethylene unit was classified based on their functions in the production. Informations for the equipment management were listed. Failure modes and causes were studied and catagorized. A set of software for equipment failure management was emploied. Factors affacting spare parts stocking were analyzed. A practical spare parts stock model was established and an intelligent spare parts stock management software was developed. (1) Focussing on the ethylene production unit, equipment was classified into 9 types such as fuenace type, tower type, heat exchanger type, pump type and compressor type, etc based on the equipment functions.
