Elementary Studies In Architectural Design Idea And Methods Emphasis On Technological Factors

Mr. Wu Liangyong indicates: " Study of architecture had better return to basic and generalize in essence." Based on this idea, the author retrospect the basic principle of architecture to the "architecture should retain firmness, applicability & beauty" that indexed in the The ten books on architecture by Vitruvii, that is to say, the theory of three factors of architecture is the start point and basic principle of this paper.Every architect will search after his optimum thinking way within the restrictions of function, technology & form. The author believe there are three kinds of design idea when architect emphasis these three factors. Those are the design idea emphasis on function factor, on form factor and on technological factor, the third idea is the major content studied in this paper. The architectural technology in this study is limited in the technology of materiality includes structure, material, tectonic (detail) & some mechanism, because architectural aesthetics can be expressed by the physical appearance of these technological factors, and form positive beauty, furthermore, these technological factors will form tectonic culture. To study these factors means to study architectural entity itself.Two parts are included in the paper. In the first part of the paper, the author analysis the design idea of emphasis technology in theory, including studies in design procedure and architects' design thinking process. There are four chapters in this part, those are basic theory, architectural technology & tectonic culture, design procedure, the requirement to Chinese architect and architectural education.In the second part of this paper, the design methodology and design method are studied, besides to review the theory of architectural design methodology, the author summarize five kinds of design method emphasized technology through lots of works, those are optimal solution, responsive method, formlanguage, parametric planning and canonic design method. The object of summarizing these five methods is not to displace traditional design method but to fortify it. System design method is advocated is this paper.The prim research approach in this paper is induction. The author analysis many representative master woks and try to generalize some rules of design methodology and design methods from these examples.
