With the development of computer and information technologies and the thorough application of them in product developing, a lot of advanced product design methods emerge as the times require. Product information and its traits have transformed essentially, becoming the core and stanchion of product design process, which is even more the fundamental problem of product design theory and technology research. Based on space-time view, the concept of 4D Product Information Model (4D-PIM) is advanced for the first time, and its fundamental technological problems are studied. The main research topics are focused on the following aspects:1.Aiming at advanced design methods, such as Concurrent Design, Cooperative Design, Design for product life cycle and so on, the space-time characteristic of product design is analyzed in detail, and the concept of 4D-PIM is advanced. Based on the analysis of the three evolving stages, namely Process Series, Process Chain and Process Flow, of product design process information integrating mode, the concurrent, iterative and successive traits of "time" in product design process are summarized. The time dimension trait, basic characters, composing principle and mode, forming process, key technology, etc, of 4D-PIM are studied.2.The problem of 4D-PIM expressing is studied, making use of object-oriented technique and hypergraph theory respectively. Based on object, the 4D-PIM is divided into three layers, namely the data layer, the data object layer and business object layer, and the expressing method of the relationship of 4D-PIM between the data structure at different time and the data in different stages is advanced. Based on the research on the information characteristic of product design process, the method of describing the communion of information in product design process with relational hypergraph network and describing 4D-PIM with hierarchical hypergraph is advanced.3. The conceptual model of 4D product information based on character and hypergraph and the 4D product data model based on hypergraph data structure are established. The extended Hypergraph Based Data Structure (HBDS) is applied to the research of the 4D information model data link system in product design process. For the realization of information fast query, the reasoning method of 4D product information data based on hypergraph is advanced.4. The filtration method based of 4D product information sharing and exchange in network-based product design process is advanced. The object and content offiltration, filter design, the feedback mechanism and cooperative filtrating mechanism, realizing process and function foundation are researched in detail. Meanwhile, a preliminary study on the performance evaluation of the network-based 4D product information filter is carried out.5. Aiming at the specific characteristic of 4D-PIM, the model and key technology of 4D-PIM dynamic evaluation in each specific stage of product design, and the multi-attributes evaluation arithmetic based on wavelet neural networks is advanced. By establishing the architecture of 4D-PIM design evaluation system, the evaluation of 4D-PIM in each design stage and each layer is realized.Finally, take a specific product as an example, the experiment system is developed, which demonstrates the validity of 4D-PIM fundamental technologies.
