The global economic competition is becoming more and more intensive and manufacturing environment for the enterprises is undergoing dramatic and unpredictable changes, so the enterprise must enhance the abilities to reconfigure their manufacturing systems to rapidly respond new market conditions. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems are put forward in such a condition. It can enhance the responsive ability to the changes of the environment with economical cost to satisfy the individual needs of the different customs.The reconfiguration of the manufacturing systems can be implemented on the machine level or on the system level, so the enabling technologies can be also categorized into two kinds corresponding to the two levels. The dissertation studies four aspects, machine tools selection, machine layout, discrete event dynamic simulation and control structure, which are related to the system level reconfiguration, and the other two aspects, fault diagnosis and reconfigurable numerical control system, which are related to the machine level reconfiguration.Selecting the appropriate machine tools according to production task is the first step for reconfiguring the manufacturing system, so the criteria system for evaluating the machine tools is structured, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process is used to determine the weights of the criteria and fuzzy integral is used to synthetically evaluate the alternatives. Whether the machine layouts is proper or not affects the performance of the reconfigured manufacturing systems and machine layout problem belongs to NP complete one, so heuristic algorithms are used to solve the problem. Single heuristic algorithm can't solve the problem perfectly; genetic algorithm and tabu search are interwoven to avoid the shortcomings.
