Recently, the container throughput soars in China main seaports. To make the container terminal capacity growth match increasing market demands of container transport, such Chinese coastal cities as Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Ninbo, are either constructing new container terminals or extending them to increase the terminal capacity. The rationality of container terminals stevedoring technology scheme directly illustrates the level of terminals construction since the correct scheme affects the service level and operation efficiency of a terminal. Hence it is critical to determine an appropriate design of stevedoring technology scheme for container terminals. However, the terminal construction level at present is conditioned by the limitation of current technical tool of the design of stevedoring technology scheme for container terminals. There are some problems in the design of stevedoring technology scheme for container terminals. First is the non-simulation mechanism, based on empirical formula, outputs inaccurate results. Another problem is that the non-simulation mechanism cannot provide various options due to different combination of machinery. Furthermore, since current simulation system is port-oriented system, which merely provides solution to individual port, one simulation system only solves issues of one port. This not only brings low efficiency but also runs against accumulating experience and generating internal rules. In order to solve the problems mentioned above, we research the general modeling and simulation for the design of stevedoring technology scheme for container terminals which is the core of the dissertation, implementation of simulation modeling and simulation for case study. The main work consists of:1. The entity, event, activity and process in general simulation system are presented in order to define the essential ingredients in general simulation system for the design of stevedoring technology scheme for container terminals which is based on discrete event dynamic systems. First, the entity determines the object within the system boundary. Furthermore, the event and activity determines the types and quality of all events which can drive corresponding activities. Last, the process determines the logical relationships between the entity and event and sequence of them within it.
