The aero-engine casing containment is important for aero-engines to improve safety and reliability. The design method of the aero-engine casing containment systematically is studied in this paper. The research work is mainly included as follows:(1) The mechanical behaviour at different strain rates of the materials that are used to make cases and blades in model casing containment test is studied. From the stress-strain curves obtained, it is found that the strain rate effect is distinct. The experimental results are used to define a new set of material constants in the Johnson-Cook model. The Johnson-Cook model can be used in the numerical simulations of model casing containment tests and real casing containment tests.(2) 25 impact tests are completed in the gas breech facility. The results indicate that the model casing is destroyed by shear stress. The results are used to validate destroy potential energy method of casing containment.(3) A series of impacting tests investigating the design method of model casing containment are carried out in the spin facility. 10 model casing containment tests are accomplished. The results are used to validate the containment-curve methods.(4) The real casing containment tests are carried out in the spin facility. The interference between the adjacent blades is considered in this test. The containment of the casing is estimated. The results can be used in the numerical simulations of real casing containment.(5) The finite element numerical method based on impact dynamics theory is studied. The representative model casing containment tests are simulated. And a real casing containment test is also simulated. The numerical simulation results are good agreement with the experimental results.
