Research On The Containment Of Kevlar Fabric Reinforced Casing

As outstanding lightweight composite fan casings, fiber fabric reinforced casings have been widely used in Trent 700, PW4084, GE90 and so on, while it’s still at an initial stage in our country. This research conducted a systematic study of fiber fabric reinforced casing containment by experimental and numerical simulation analysis. Some of the specific research tasks are as follows.(1) Investigation on the numerical simulation methods has been conducted. Simple model of Kevlar49 fabric impacted by cylindrical projectile was developed through two modeling methods, yarn model and continuum model. The results indicated that the continuum model could show the fabric failure mode at the macro-scale, and was suitable for engineering application.(2) The containment test program and measure system on the spin tester have been confirmed. We finished the design and the make of the imitation cases. At the same time, the test rotor with a structure of tongue and groove was designed and checked.(3) Ten containment tests of Kevlar fabric reinforced casing have been conducted under high speed spin test facility, with different fabric layers and different out-blade velocities. Combined with numerical simulation, the impact process of blade and case, and the ability to absorb energy of Kevlar fabric are detailedly analyzed. By computing critical speeds of different Kevlar thicknesses, an empirical designing equation has been formulated, which could give a direction of the engineering application.(4) Research on the real aeroengine case wrapped by Kevlar fabric has been conducted. A certain type of turbofan engine casing was optimized by using the Kevlar fabric reinforced architecture, which made it meet the requirement of containment.
