Although China is generally in the middle age of industrialization, some essential changes are happening to both economic and social structure of big cities. Under such situation, how to bring more industrial buildings into the proper protection and reuse, becomes an important and urgent new subject in our architecture protection career. As an industrial center of modern China, Shanghai is topical city of studying industrial buildings. In today's Shanghai which has rebuild industrial buildings in the renovation of city, the importance of the protection and reuse of industrial buildings has not yet in mutual agreement, the depth and span of interrelated studies and practices are not enough to be an integrated theory and extended.On the base of summarizing international advanced experiences, the thesis firstly discusses the definition and classification standards of industrial buildings in Shanghai, and then proves the basic principle, methods of application, technology of protection and reuse of industrial buildings in Shanghai.The thesis focuses on the period of the early 1849s to the late 1940s. The 2nd chapter reveals the integrated value of modern industrial buildings in Shanghai, and provides theory basics for the protection and reuse of them. The 3rd chapter is about the background of the establishment of industrial buildings in Shanghai, which illustrates the evolutionary process. By discussing inside reasons from economic, political, social aspects, this chapter also explains the particularity of protection and the importance of reuse for modern industrial buildings in Shangha. In the 4th,5th and 6th chapters, by anglicizing present policy and practice of industrial buildings in Shanghai, the author is trying to build a strategies system from three levels; the appendix includes the protection and reuse of industrial buildings in west countries, policy and laws related to the industrial buildings in Shanghai, the inventory of extant industrial buildings in Shanghai, and so on, which offers others information for more research.
