Now in the west part of China, lots of earth dwellings exist and are being used in the country area. Along with the step of "Exploring the West" and "Constructing socialistic harmonious new countries", these houses are facing an important change. On one hand, the living standard of people in the west is improving, so they are longing for living in comfort and bright houses. But in despite of warmth in winter and coolness in summer, traditional earth dwellings have much shortage because of the cognitive limit of local people. On the other hand, they can't copy the city houses absolutely because they haven't enough money. Further more they will put much pressure on the environment of the west. In addition the rich and colorful earth culture that comes into being for changeful climates, various landforms and numerous nations in the west needed to be inherited and developed. Now because these houses don't develop following the step of the social development, some houses look antipathetic with surrounding environments. In a word, country earth dwellings are needed and possible to change. This discourse probes into how to make earth houses satisfy the modern and sustainable demand of the western country people on the basis of the anterior research such as the stability and permanence of the earth material and structure, the indoor thermal and humid environment of earth envelopes and its aseismatic capability.Firstly, on the basis of analyzing actuality of the earth houses in the west part of China, the author found disciplines contained during the developed courses of traditional earth dwellings and opened out the essence of their modern renovation and pointed out the shortages that aren't fit modern life and correlative factors that affect the country dwellings' development. Then the author discussed the regional and functional adaptation of earth houses and put forwarded the organic growth theory in the villages and the future mode for the western earth dwellings, which not only satisfy the current need but also make allowance for future development.Secondly, the author put forward "four index taxonomy" to summarize multifarious passive design methods used in traditional earth dwellings in different areas for western complicated climates. These methods should be inherited and at the same time proper technologies including new resources, water saving, environment improving and life quality upgrading would be used in new dwellings design but need to correspond with each other. We will try our best to reform the western people's living environment at limited economic stage. At last, the author took a practical case, which had been defined as a demonstration project by Ministry of Construction of the People's Republic of China as an example to prove that earth dwellings have large potential to develop in western country area. We participated in this project from earlier field survey, testing to design and achievement of the houses. Local people and government greeted these houses. We believe that the modern regeneration of the earth dwellings is feasible. The all research indicates that the modern regeneration of roral earth dwellings in the west part of China is necessary and feasible. During the courses, architects are essential to take part in. After analysing the inbeing of these houses and people's living requirement, architects redisign spaces and integrate appropriate technologies into the new houses combining local climate, terrain, culture, economy and social environments to improve the living standard and protect the western entironment. Currently, we call on all architects to pay attention on the west part and the countries. This is our obligation and responsibility.
