The paper analyzes the development of the early-modern city planning of China from 1840 to 1949, and discuss how the culture of the city planning of China came into being and spread all over the China and what influenced the development of the city planning of China by researching the elements of the early-modern city planning in detail combining with the politics, economy and society culture and etc. The research could enhance the research about the theory and history of the early modern city planning, and gives the enlightenment to the research on the history of cities in China and the culture communications between China and the Western.The paper has 10 chapters.The first chapter defines the objects and ranges of research, and clarified the research intention and brings out special means for the research, and explains some important keywords.The second chapter divides the whole time of the early modern city planning into several periods and discusses the characters of the city planning of each period, which is always connected with politic, economic and social backgrounds. Meanwhile some of the typical city plannings are discussed.The third chapter discusses the thoughts of early-modern time and analyzes the basis and media of the change and spread of the city planning culture in order to find the law of the development of city planning of China.The fourth chapter discusses the relationship between city planning and their designated function and physical space pattern and city landscape in the early-modern time.The fifth and sixth and seventh chapters discuss the system of the early-modern city planning about its administration and legislation, in which the first city planning law of China is analyzed in detail.The eighth chapter discusses the theories of the early-modern city planning, and brings out the point on the reason of the city planning stepping from tradition to early-modern and from imitation to stand on its own bottom. The ninth chapter reviews the early-modern city planning of Shanghai and discusses the character of its development.The last chapter makes a conclusion about success and failure of the early-modern city planning of China and the contribution of that brought to the city planning nowadays.
