Study On The Construction And Morphology Transition Of The Drum-tower Hui Community In Xi'an

The globalization and urbanization have engulfed all over the world since last century.Against this background, the traditional urban Hui communities have undergone severe testand their morphologies have evolved constantly. On the one hand, the soar of city economyhas droved the economic structure of Hui communities in motion and infused some newvitality into the community space. However, as traditional settlements, there is still a great gapbetween the urban Hui communities and the other regions of city. On the other hand, amongthe globalization context, the high frequency of multiculture collision has aggravated thecharacteristic crisis and the traditional crisis of those urban Hui communities. A lot oftraditional urban Hui communities disintegrated rapidly. Facing this urgent position, the studyon urban Hui communities has become one of the most important themes about theharmonious development of Chinese city in the knowledge economy era.Currently, studies about the urban Hui communities mainly concentrate on the sociologyand economics, but very short of search in the planning view. Aimed at that study reality, thispaper selects Drum-tower Hui community of Xi'an as the study subject and founds a solidstudy frame based on the interdisciplinary science of urban planning, sociology, economics,anthropology, and historiography, in order to probe into the dynamic mechanism of the urbanHui community evolvement and explore ways for the harmonious development of thetraditional urban Hui communities.This paper is mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, in the light of history development,the transition track of the Drum-tower Hui community is outlined and the morphologycharacteristic and historic value of"reside surrounding the temple, trade clinging to themarket"are cognized. Based on these, this paper points out that the"temple-lane"residingmorphology of the Drum-tower Hui community is a very important urban cultural heritageand virtually derived from the Hui ethnic tradition and Chinese ancient city's constructionsystem. Secondly, staring with the contemporary transition of the Drum-tower Hui community,the dynamic mechanism and the developing problems are discussed through social surveysand spacial syntax analyses. At the same time, combined with the developing patternscompare of the modern urban Hui communities, the actual development of the Drum-towerHui community is reconsidered. In the result, this paper regards the organization drive fromthe urban space and community inner system as the main dynamic mechanism that draws theHui community forward and considers that the compact residing morphology should be the most reasonable choice for the future Drum-tower Hui community. Thirdly, based on thediscrimination of harmonious development concept from different views, the multipleintegration theory and methods for the traditional urban Hui communities are put forward.And then, with the case study on the construction integration of the Drum-tower Huicommunity, the actual countermeasures are investigated. At last, the study conclusions, thestudy shortages, and the further study direction are summed up.
