Architectural Regionalism In Spontaneous Building

As one of the most important characters of regional architecture,"spontaneous"has not been sufficiently researched. In the structure of Self- organization theory, this thesis researches"spontaneous"to expand the field of study, focusing on subjective as well as irrational factors and discovers how they manage to form regionalism from bottom up.The Self-organization theory has been introduced to the research in order to analysis the mechanism of regionalism generation. Regional and Self-organization theory both concern to the context of time and space. The organization mode of spontaneous construction and self- organization are similar.Under the structure of Self-organization theory, architecture regionalism can be divided into three categories: spontaneous, self conscious and self introspection. The spontaneous level should be particularly concentrated on. The architecture regionalism not only derives from the spacial constraints on buildings, but also the from the builders. It is not an inevitable outcome of the nature and man.Acorrding to self-organization theory, spontaneous building activities can be described as a process, which is not controlled by specific instructions. Inorder to improve its living condition, family as decision making unit, makes the decision of the site, form and investment respectively. Spontaneous buildings summarized and highlighted the self-organized features of buildings such as traditional houses, rural houses, self-help buildings, squatter settlements, and building reconstructions. As a basic construction method, Spontaneous building has three main characteristics: wide distribution, open-end implementation and diverse performance. The open-end implementation which refers to various possibilities of time, participants, rules, forms, and motivations is the most essential. As congregation of great amount of individual behaviors, Spontaneous building can reflect the inherent laws of spontaneous regionalism much more evidently.In the perspective of spontaneous buildings, the factors, which influence architectural regionalism, can be divided into three categories: basic principles, rational elements, irrational elements. Six self-organization attributes can be summarized: learning and memory, dynamic adaptation of structure, separation of function and form, form uncertainty, short distance communication, characteristics emergency. Within them,"short distance communication"and"characteristics emergency", revealed the generation mechanism of architecture regionalism. During the course of"generation, nucleation, critical reaching, and order forming", microcosmic, random and subjective factors get power to guide and control the environment. They become the essential factors to define the architecture regionalism. Architectural regionalism is here described as emerging processes of mutual characteristics of specific site.Based on the cognition of generating mechanism of architecture regionalism, the transformation from spontaneous to self-conscious is discussed."Defined responsive design"is proposed as a design method to reinforce the architectural regionalism. The site should be defined as the source of the will-be applied resolution. Not only its nature and culture, but also its generated order should be respected and referred to.
