The farmland of reforestation areas in Pingshan, Hebei is basically supplied by rain. And water is a limiting factor for revegegation there. At present it was a trend to develop water-saving agroforestry, banding together with "Converting Cropland to Forest Project". Main agroforestry models were studied to screen out the water-saving and acceptable agroforestry pattern. Spatial and temporal changes of soil moisture, root distribution characteristics and their water utilization were studied by pot trials of 8 economic trees' seedings such as walnut, Dongzao, apricot etc.. A set of questionnaire was answered by local farmers and relative experts. Finally the existing agroforestry models were primarily evaluated by Analytic Hierarchy Process. This paper anticipates to provide reference case for tree species composition and selection, the disposition of forest structure and water management. The results were as follows:(1)Transpiration rate of species would be changed with soil moisture variation. With sufficient water supply, the order of transpiration rate was PozaoJ. regia×R. Scutellariae (ravine) >J. regia×M. sativa (ravine) >J. regia monocropped >J. regia×M. sativa (downgrade of terrace) >J. regia×R. Scutellariae (downgrade of terrace) . Water utilization of Z. bungeanum was less than J. regia, which was a water-saving model. Water utilization of intercropped R. Scutellariae,M. sativa was more than Ar. hypogaea and control. So Z. bungeanum×Ar. Hypogaea was water-saving model in all and should be developed.(10)10 agroforestry models expended in the future were primarily evaluated in terms of the economic benefit, ecological benefit and social benefit. Models of J. regia×D. esculenta,Dongzao×A. hypogaea and J. regia×A. hypogaea were the better. J. regia monocropped and J. regia×Setaria italica were not very well. The relationship among 3 benefits and the construction aim of compound system should be considered when these models were introduced into or extended.
