In modern Chinese, the directional complements are rather special. They are flexible in meaning and are comparatively easy to express. Simultaneously, they are remarkable for their frequency count and generalization of meaning. For long time, they have been one of the hotspots in Chinese grammar.Starting with the study of the directional complement "下", the current research discusses the syntactic structure of "v 下", the grammaticalization process of directional complement "下"and the grammaticalization principle of it from the diachronic and synchronic angles. Based on the research, we explore the grammatical meanings of "下" in modern Chinese as well.The thesis comprises 3 chapters. Through a comprehensive study of a large number of linguistic facts, chapter 1 explores the grammaticalization process of directional complement "下",make sure the period when "下" started the grammaticalization process: the intransitive verb "下" started in the Han Dynasty, and the transitive one in Nanbei Dynasty.Also, "下" started to express meaning of time besides meaning of space.The last 2 chapters discuss the meaning of "下 " from the angle of synchronic evolvement mainly.
