Xibe tribe was one of the ancient tribes of Northeast in China. It belonged to the Horqin Mongolia in the Late Ming and Early Qing Dynasty. Xibe and other tribes were redeemed by the government of Qing in spending lots of money in1692, and regimented in the Manchu Eight Banners. And they were assigned to the military garrisons in the northeast of China, then they migrated southwards to Mukden and its neighboring cities.More than one thousand of Xibe army officers and soldiers were sent to Yili in Western Regions in29years of Qianlong (1764). From then, they had developed and protected our western frontier areas for more than170years.After that, Manchuria Xibe tribe started to set up the Eight Banners system and was famous for Xibe. Xibe Eight Banners set up eight nirus in the fertile the south bank of Yili river. The officers and soldiers of Xibe Eight Banners mainly were stationed to Kalun and military posts and protected them. Xibe soldiers were famous for their bravery and their people were good at agricultural operation. For these, Xibe Eight Banners revealed themselves and set a pattern for other Eight Banners, and they gradually became an important part of Bannermen society in Yili.Xibe tribe is the only one of the Manchuria ethnic groups that is completely retained in the Chinese modern history of Northwest Minority. Its deeper reason is worth exploring. But in the case of the writings about Xibe history now, there are so many contradictions. They make people confused. As for its origin and natural language, there still have been a lot of controversies in the academic circles up to now.My primary concern is to discuss the military functions, economic life, religious beliefs and cultural and educational aspects of Xibe tribe, and focuses on its reformation during the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China. Finally, the reformation makes the Xibe tribe separate from Manchu and develop independently.
