In the poetry history of Qing dynasty, there were only few people who were both good at theoretical creativity and poetry writing Yuan Mei was such a figure reserving to be reckoned with. As a poet whose identity breaking away from "shi" and becoming a resident of a city, Yuan Mei’s "Theory of Spirit" made poetry writing a method which expressed poet’s feelings freely and not a tool of political aims and academic research.This dissertation offers a comprehensive introduction of Yuan Mei’s poems. The chapters are organized to four parts: subject of Yuan Mei’s poems,motheds of poetry-writing,evaluation from Qing dynasty and today and resource of poetic tradition.Chapter 1 is a depute of traditional evaluation on Yuan Mei’s poems. Some scholars considered that Yuan Mei’s poems were style-low and just a wit’s poems. Reasons are given for these biases.Chapter2 focuses on methods of poetry-writing. The methods that are discussed here includes of using metaphor and allusion, "bei mian fu fun", using drama skills writing poems.Chapter 3 discusses the traditional resource of Yuan Mei’s poems. By compared with poems of tang and song dynasties’s poets, Yuan Mei’s inheritance and transcendence was detailed expounded.Chapter 4 is a detailed account of four subjects poems of Yuan Mei’s poems which were female subject, Manor subject,love subject and "eatting and drinking " subject.
