The labor of the modern society is increasingly abstract, one-sided, formal, activities of human life constantly reduced to the tools and means of proliferation of capital to create exchange value, labor losses rich connotation and human existence is in alienation. Marx’s concept of labor is the core concept of Marxist philosophy, it is also the ontological category by which Marxist philosophy transcends rational metaphysics and realizes philosophical revolution. This paper attempts to sort out the source of the history of the Marx’s concept of labor in the context of the history of Western thought, to understand the ins and outs of the concept of labor in the history of thought, to study the concept of labor in the traditional Western thought, the concept of labor of the classical economists and principles of activities of German classical philosophy respectively, to grasp the link and essential difference between them and Marx’s concept of labor. It will reveal historic change which Marx’s concept of labor realizes on the height of the ontology, elaborate how Marx run through the sense of immanence and transcend metaphysics by objective activity of labor; According to the text of Marx different periods, to explore the internal connection between Marx’s concept of labor and the construction of Historical Materialism and the Critique of Political Economy. Labor is the activity of human life, it is not only the production of material life, but also gives birth to social relations and human themselves. But Capital dominates labor and labor is increasingly abstract, which makes human perceptual activity loss rich content, reduced to the tools of capital proliferation. Labor is the practical base of human history, if human society want to go into the realm of freedom from the realm of necessity in the future, it lies in labor’s liberation from the slavery of the capital and truly becomes free and independent activities, to achieve the free and comprehensive development; To explore contemporary sight of Marx’s concept of labor, combined with the current fundamental questions facing contemporary human society and the historical background, to explore the connotation of the times of Marx’s concept of labor and reveal Survival Significance of labor for the contemporary human society. To expand dialogue with Heidegger, Habermas, Baudrillard and other modern Western thinkers, standing on the height of the ontological principles, to clarify modern Western thinkers misreading of Marx’s concept of labor and respond positively to a variety of theoretical challenges, to elucidate the true implication of labor and promote in-depth study of existentialism direction of Marx’s concept of labor, fully demonstrate the contemporary significance of Marxist philosophy.
