With the rapid development of China,it has attracted worldwide attention and made great achievements in various aspects. Meanwhile,there are still some prejudices and misunderstandings in the international society’s attitude towards China. How to demonstrate China to the world becomes a major academic project of the current foreign publicity. Mao Zedong made beneficial exploration and practice in foreign publicity. He fought the domestic and foreign hostile forces using publicity as a weapon,and achieved significant results. Mao Zedong put forward a series of incisive and original ideas in the great practice of foreign publicity. He formed the foreign publicity thought with the special characteristics and made a significant contribution to the establishment of foreign publicity theory. Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought contains great wisdom, which is based on China’s situation and inherits the thought of Marx and Lenin and the essence of Chinese traditional culture. Mao Zedong tries to seek the solution to resolving the problem of China from them. This conforms to the law of historical development and Chinese reality. Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought not only has the historical contribution, but also has some historical limitations. It is quite theoretically significant and practically significant for present China’s foreign publicity to summarize the historical experience of Mao Zedong in foreign publicity practice and combine with China’s reality as well as learn the laws from it.The thesis consists of the introduction, main text and conclusion. The introduction mainly discusses the basis and the significance of the topic choosing and the literature review. It also elaborates the research object,the ideas of research,the research methods,the research focus,the research difficulty and the innovation. The part of introduction lays foundation for the research of the text. Based on the summary and analysis of the related content,the theme of the thesis is named Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. The main text consists of four chapters,which is the main part of the thesis. The main contents are as follows:The first chapter defines the connotation which is related to the thesis. Firstly,it defines the connotation of propaganda,communication,news and discusses the relationship of them. Secondly,it defines the connotation of public opinion,international public opinion, public opinion propagation and discusses the relationship of them. Thirdly,it defines the connotation of foreign publicity,overseas publicity,international communication,public diplomacy and discusses the relationship of them. Lastly,it defines the connotation of publicity,foreign publicity and Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought in the text.The second chapter discusses the forming condition and the forming process of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. The thought of the traditional culture and the theory of Marx and Lenin about the publicity are the theoretical origin of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity. To change the prejudices of the West,to establish the international united front,to strive for the international support and assistance and to strengthen the connection between China and the world are the objective conditions of the formation of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity. Mao Zedong’s personal experience and his personal character are the subjective conditions of the formation of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity. The forming process starts from germination to formation,and then to the development. According to the ruling geographical scope of the Communist Party of China(CPC),the forming process of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought is divided into three periods. The first is the embryonic period of the Communist Party powering preliminarily in Ruijin,Jiangxi. The second is the formation period of the Communist Party powering partially in Yan’an. The third is the developing period of the Communist Party powering completely after the founding of new China. The thesis analyzes and summarizes the era background and practical basis of each period,the content of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought of each period and the characteristics of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought of each period. In the embryonic period,it was the age of proletarian revolution. The trend of the world was to joint proletarian revolution force to fight against imperialism. On the practical basis of studying the news theory,founding the newspaper in his youth and struggling with the Kuomintang news agency,Mao Zedong put forward the proposition of uniting the world proletariat,recognizing the aggressive nature of Japanese imperialism and adhering to the principle of real news. The characteristics of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought are as follows:the awareness of foreign publicity is established preliminarily and the one-way communication mode is formed. In the formative period, the international anti-fascist united front and the domestic anti-Japanese national united front were established gradually. On the practical basis of transferring information through foreign journalists,struggling with the Kuomintang and the puppet government and criticizing fascist crimes,Mao Zedong put forward the proposition of strengthening the contact between CPC and the world,striving for the support and assistance of the international community,establishing the international anti-fascist united front,attaching importance to media such as newspaper and radio,paying attention to publicity strategy and methods. The characteristics of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought are as follows:the awareness of foreign publicity is established formally, the situation is opened by the foreign journalists and the two-way communication mode was formed. In the developing period,There existed the conflict between the capitalism camp headed by US and the socialist camp headed by the Soviet Union. With the outburst of the national liberation movement,the colonial system collapsed finally. On the practice basis of visiting to the Soviet Union personally,participating on the Korean War,publicizing China’s development achievements and correcting “left” errors,Mao Zedong put forward the proposition of paying attention to the class nature of newspaper, objecting to “peaceful evolution”,contacting with diplomacy closely,adhering to the uniformity of public opinion and improving the immunity of public opinion. The characteristics of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought are as follows:the foreign publicity situation is changed from passive to active, the foreign publicity develops in various areas and the achievements and mistakes exist together..Based on the practical experience in the forming and developing process of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought,the third chapter analyzes the main content of the thought. Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought consists of the position and function,principle,target and task,object,strategy,carrier and team building of foreign publicity. Foreign publicity is a wing of the CPC’s publicity work. It is the guide of shaping the international image of CPC and China. It is the public opinion weapon of carrying out the international struggle. It is the public opinion tool of cooperating with foreign work. It adheres to the principle of party spirit,of seeking truth from facts,of different inside and outside,of different outside and outside,of advancing with the times. The foreign publicity undertakes the task of transferring the voice of China,shaping the image of the country and seeking the understanding of international society. Mao Zedong publicized to different object in China’s revolution period and construction period. He publicize on the foreign communists,foreign heads of state,overseas Chinese,foreigners coming to China for aid,foreign delegation,foreign journalists,foreign parties,soldiers and students,the Japanese invaders, etc. The foreign publicity takes the strategy of optimizing the environment, positioning the publicity role accurately, choosing the media appropriately,improving the level of foreign reporting and playing a role of public opinion correctly. The carrier of the foreign publicity is agencies,newspapers and periodicals,books,telegraphs,festivals,declarations,speeches and so on.The fourth chapter analyzes the historical evaluation of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. Firstly,the thesis discusses the characteristics of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. Secondly,the thesis discusses the historical contribution of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. It inherits and carries forward the publicity thought in the traditional culture,enriches and develops the publicity theory of Marxism and founding the basis of publicity theory with Chinese characteristics. Thirdly,the thesis analyzes the historical limitations of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought. It emphasizes the class nature of newspaper unilaterally,the left-leaning errors and the blind hero worship,and it ignores the supervision function of the media. Lastly,the thesis summarizes the historical experience of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity practice. We should correctly grasp the international and domestic situation. We should accurately judge the principal contradiction at home and abroad. We should focus on the research of the major issue at home and abroad. We should adhere to the historical tradition of foreign publicity. From the historical analysis of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought and combining with the opportunities, challenges and plights of the current foreign publicity,the thesis discusses the modern enlightenment of Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought through improving international discourse right,making full use of new media,learning from the communication theories of the western and finally realizing the “localization” of the western.In front of the important position of foreign publicity and its challenges,the part of conclusion expounds Mao Zedong’s foreign publicity thought and its academic significance,theoretical significance and practical significance. In the end,it points out the problems which is need to be further studied in the future.
