Forest product industry is a forest product processing industry based on forest resources and dominated by timber resources. It is composed of timber processing, chemical processing of forest products, pulping and papermaking, etc., and constitutes an important part in China’s national economy as well as an indispensable industry for people’s livelihood. It makes a significant contribution to development of people’s livelihood forest and China’s social economy. In the situation of new normal of Chinese economy, great attention is paid to environmental protection and pressures on resources of forest product industry. In order to adapt to the new normal of Chinese economy and improve the industrial competitiveness of forest product industry, this thesis takes provincial regions in China as objects, and according to theories and research methods of regional industrial competitiveness, the thesis applies research methods of combining theoretical research with empirical research, qualitative research with quantitative research, crosswise comparison with longitudinal comparison, to construct an assessment system for the research on regional industrial competitiveness, summarize the industrial profile, research status and industrial distribution of forest product industries, carry out empirical research and get an assessment result. Finally, it proposes countermeasures and suggestions for improving industrial competitiveness of forest product industries of provincial regions in China.Main conclusions of this thesis are as follows:(1)To analyze theoretically, the analysis on factors of forest product industries competitiveness of provincial regions in China mainly covers regional resources factor, regional market factor, regional enterprise quality factor, regional institutional environment factor and regional correlative supporting industry factor.(2)In order to fully disclose industrial characteristics and influence factors of provincial regional forest product industries in China, a competitiveness assessment indicator system for China provincial regional forest product industries is constructed by referring to Porter’s diamond model. It contains three first grade indicators, eleven second grade indicators and twenty-nine assessment indicators.(3)The result of horizontal evaluation on industrial competitiveness of China provincial regional forest product industries indicates that the forest product industry’s competitiveness of eight comprehensive economic zones of China are evidently different from each other. Regional industrial competitiveness of north coastal economic zone, east coastal economic zone and south coastal economic zone is strongest, and their basic competitiveness and environmental competitiveness make greater contribution to improving their overall competitiveness; regional industrial competitiveness of northeast economic zone and the middle Yellow River economic zone is stronger, and their core competitiveness and environmental competitiveness make greater contribution to improving their overall competitiveness; regional industrial competitiveness of middle Yangtze River economic zone is medium, and its basic competitiveness and environmental competitiveness make greater contribution to improving its competitiveness; regional industrial competitiveness of southwest economic zone and northwest economic zone is weak, and their environmental competitiveness makes greater contribution to improving its competitiveness.(4)This thesis applies comprehensive assessment model to make a longitudinal assessment on Shangdong, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Fujian, Henan, Hebei, Inner Mogolia and Guangxi, who are at the top of 2013 comprehensive competitiveness rank. Its result shows performance of the ten provincial regions during 2004 to 2013 cab be classified into four classes. It is clearly shown that, comprehensive competitiveness indexes of forest product industries of Jiangsu and Shandong are between 67 and 72, and they are classified as class Ⅰ, for they have obvious industrial advantages; comprehensive competitiveness indexes of forest product industries of Guangdong, Liaoning, Fujian are between 60 and 66, and they are classⅡ; Henan, Zhejiang, Guangxi, Inner Mogolia and Hebei are between 58 and 61, and they are class Ⅲ.(5)This essay puts forward countermeasures and suggestions for improving industrial competitiveness of forest product industries of provincial regions in China. By analyzing the path of improving regional industrial competitiveness of China forest product industry, the thesis gives suggestions for improving from national level and regional level. First, strengthen forest cultivation and transportation infrastructural construction to improve basic competitiveness; second, enhance industry technological innovation promoting industrial restructuring and concentration to improve core competitiveness; third, intensify institutional environment construction promoting development of correlative supporting industries to improve environmental competitiveness. As for regional level, measures to improve regional industrial competitiveness should be made objectively according to different industrial distributions and characteristics of different groups.
