Intellectual Property Capability, Its Evolution And Firm Growth

In the age of knowledge economy and globalization, emerging technology arise constantly, China firms are facing new opportunities and challenges. Especially, the firms in high technology industries are urgent in need to change the development model and enhance the function of innovation driven to firm growth in order to against companies from developed countries to monopoly the innovation resources relying on the inherent technical advantages and to reverse the disadvantage of global competition. Under this background, the intangible resources such as intellectual property gradually replace traditional tangible resources become an important power to promote the development and growth of firm. However, based on the theory of firm capability, resource can not promote the development of firm directly. And the capability related resource is the fundamental reason for the growth of firm. For those reason, intellectual property as a resource dose not promote the growth and development of firm directly by itself. Through the creation, use and management of intellectual property, firm can transform the intellectual property to performance. Therefore, the importance of firm intellectual property development and construction of their capacity has been reached unprecedented heights. And, study about firm intellectual property capacity become an important theoretic problem. Currently, more studies focus on status analysis, experience summary, concept analysis, and policy design, while rare papers analyze intellectual property capability’s evolution and its affective to the growth from a microcosmic view about its characteristics.In this dissertation, the problem of “How firm’s intellectual property capacity evolution” and “How intellectual property capacity influence the growth of firm” are discussed by using theories of firm growth, dynamic capabilities and strategic orientation. Methodologies include the combination of theoretical research and empirical research, literature review and field research, qualitative research and quantitative research.This dissertation focuses on the following four aspects:(1)Literature review and theoretical development. Through reviewing the theories about intellectual property, firm capability, strategic orientation, firm growth, analyzing intellectual property capacity concept by similar concepts, to find out the limitations and determine the appropriate research point, thereby forming the basis of this dissertation.(2)Construction of conceptual model. From the perspective of “strategic orientation ", analyze the relationship between strategic orientation and the evolution of intellectual property capability, and the relationship between intellectual property capability and the growth of firm, then provide relative conceptual model.(3)Empirical research. Based on data of computer application industry lasted at Shanghai & Shenzhen stock exchange market, the model is tested by using regression analysis, and the mechanism model is confirmed.Through above research, the main conclusions of this dissertation are listed as follows:(1)Strategic orientation is the key factor influencing the evolution of intellectual property capability of firm. According to the difference of investment tendency of firm resource, strategic orientation can be divided into entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation. And these two aspects of strategic orientation will affect the evolution of firm’s intellectual property capability. On one hand, entrepreneurial orientation promote the capability of intellectual property creation through encourage firm’s innovative behavior, and promote the capability of intellectual property using through encourage firm’s applying innovation behavior. On the other hand, market orientation promote the capability of intellectual property using through encourage firm’s incremental innovation. The difference of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation has created the different intellectual property capability structure and influence the evolution of intellectual property capability.(2)The intellectual property capability of firm is accompanied by the evolution of the strategic orientation. Based on the level of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, firm’s strategic orientation can be divided into four types: strong strategic orientation, leading by entrepreneurial orientation, leading by market orientation and strategic orientation fuzzy. Firm’s structure of intellectual property capability and its strategic orientation type are matched with each other, different strategic orientation’s evolution formation the corresponding intellectual property capability finally.(3)There are significant correlation between intellectual property capability and the growth of firm. Firm’s intellectual property capability as an important capability source from intangible resources. Intellectual property capability through three dimensions there are creation, using and management to promote the growth of firm. The differences of firm strategy lead to the different tendency of resources allocation, as a result formed a corresponding intellectual property capability structure. And the difference of intellectual property capability structure will affected the growth of firm.(4)Regional environmental factors have an important influence on the relationship between intellectual property capability and the growth of firm. The process of intellectual property capability affecting the growth of firm will be affected by external environmental factors. This dissertation through empirical research the growth of firm verify the modification of the degree of industrial clustering as regional industrial environment factors and the intellectual property protection intensity as regional policy environment factors to the relationship between intellectual property capability and the growth of firm. Finally, the conclusion could be get that in the context of China, the modification effect to intellectual property capability derived from the regional policy environment factors rather than industrial factorsHowever, due to limited time, experience, and research level, limitations will be discussed in last chapter; the further studies will be presented as well...
