In recent years, global climate change had brought severe test to the living environment development. As the concentration of industry and residence, the city both responsible for climate change, but also slow down the crisis. In China, face the dual pressures of development and emission reduction, state and local authorities were attaching importance to low-carbon transition of rapid urbanization region gradually, and the existing way of thinking in city planning system began to develop in the direction of climate response. In the context of such research, the innovation need for method and theory of urban design was even more necessary and urgent.This study was designed to reduce the urban man-made GHG emissions, and provide theoretical method support for creating climate-friendly urban space environment. Follows the technical route about"What it is– What to do– How to do– How well it does", this subject discussed problems on two aspects of theory and practice. First, by carding and understanding the practical needs of low-carbon city development, development trend of urban design core value system and the mechanism of the urban system carbon cycle and energy metabolism, it suggested that is necessary to achieve urban design low-carbon objectives from the point of a higer perspective and more integrated. Based on the theory,"low-carbon-oriented urban content"was explained from 4 pespects of the definition, obfect system, object composition and basic characteristics, as theory basis to construct an operating method, to solve the question of"what it is". Second, an urban design 5-levels low-carbon elements was suggested starting from the analyzing relationship about urban low-carbon elements and urban design, as fulcrum of propose solution, to solve the question of"what to do". Again, the relationship between the various elements was discussed, climate protection issues and the 4 core issures were suggested, and strategies collection to achieve various topics were discussed, as practice guidelines of design structure, to solve the question of"how to do". Finally, urban design carbon emissions measurement methods was constructed by referencing carbon measurement and auditing principles, and low-carbon performance analysis method was further explored, as the value mark of practical operation, to solve the question of"how well it does". As a result, the low-carbon-oriented urban design concepts, elements, issues, strategies and performance analysis method constituted a methodology to design climate-friendly urban space environment, and it was the core results of this object.
