The thesis is focused on studying the tendency to complexity in the diversecontemporary architecture creations. The thesis, under the background of rapiddevelopment of complexity science, gets it guidances from the complexity theory andthe theoretical frame by Edgar Morin, a French philosopher and sociologist. Through aninterdisciplinary study and philosophy's thorough insight of contemporary complexissues, the thesis presents an analysis for the complexity tendency which is happening inthe contemporary architecture creations. The thesis aims to make a theoretical supportand a clear clarification for the complex phenomenon in the contemporary architecture.First, the thesis goes through the complexity tendency in contemporary architectureby tracing the origin and the patch of the growth of complexity of contemporaryarchitecture. The thesis, then, presents an objective description of the features ofcontemporary complexity tendency, giving analysis of its generation context andsummarizing the achieved comprehension and ideas. After that, the thesis points out thedisadvantage of traditional comprehension of the complexity, and then naturally extendsthis architectural complexity to philosophical field and thus connects architecture withphilosophy. In the philosophical field, it is natural to introduce Edgar Morin'sComplexity Paradigm into architecture. Following a detailed introduction, interpretationand critical analysis of Morin's Complexity Paradigm, the thesis then chooses come ofMorin's propositions to show an interpretation framework for the complexity incontemporary architecture. Within this framework, four key relationships are utilized tointerpret the complexity in architecture. The four relationhisps are: order&disorder, universality&diversity, constitution&generation, and subject&object. The thesis hassummarized the mentality shift concerning complexity in contemporary architecturethourgh conducting specific filed works and case studies. By giving an analysis of thethinking of contemporary architecture, the thesis proposes four modes of thinking andgives a further discussion on the complexity of contemporary architecture. Last, thethesis critically re-thinks this complexity and presents enlightening points about thetheory and the practice of contemporary Chinese architecture. The thesis covers the period from the1980s to the present, concerning for onlysome typical complexity mentalities to discover the complexity in architecture. It aims to contribute to some useful references for the contemporary architecture through theanalysis and the study of the complexity.
