An Exploration and Criticism Upon Lu Shi'e's NovelLu Shi'e(1878~1944) was an active prolific fiction writer with unique style during the end of the Qing dynasty and the Republic of China. The study about him has drawn the interest of the academic circle. This dissertation works on the fiction texts as the object of detailed study, and roughly outlines the changes, his writing, social meanings and artistic tastes of Lu's fiction for about thirty years from 1906 to 1933, And it also intends to discover some of the basic trends and laws of the modern fiction and its artistic development through the observation of its history ,the inheritance and revolution of the past tradition. This study no doubt will be useful for the promotion of the modem fiction study. It pays attention to the integration and unity of the study on the fiction, value criteria and esthetic trends, macro and periodic understanding as well as discovery of some anecdotal works.The dissertation consists of the introduction and six chapters. The introduction briefly relates the background of the theme and significance of the study, a recall of the study and reflections, the structure of this dissertation and its approaches of study, and the area of this study.The first chapter Fiction Writing does some textual study and comments on some of Lu's representative works as chapter-type, note-taking type and documentary type fiction. The second chapter Fiction Concepts discusses Lu's views that guide his writing, for instance, fiction is a mirror of the times reflecting the sociaty, function of fiction lies in punishment and persuasion to revitalize the sociaty from decadent life. It also studies Lu's ideal politics and govement and his fiction theory. The third chapter Fiction Values focuses on the relation between Lu's fiction and the late Qing and the Republic times. The themes of the modern fiction demomstrate a clear ethos. Aparticular social history inspires the writer's enthusiasm to create. He in his novel recapitulates the history of the late Qing and the Republic, and demonstrates clearly his psychological experience and artistic creation in this period. The fourth chapter Fiction Techniques analyzes the narrative structure and angles of Lu's fiction, his narrative characteristics; the author and the fiction construction; and the series of heroes in his fiction, the riddles, inscription, poems, lyrics, rhapsodies and qu; the conceptions and explanation of dreams, and the characteristics of historical novels; and "narration and creation " and allusions. The fifth chapter Fiction Style focuses on the series of characters in his fiction, the extension and selection of his fiction themes; his derisive and cursive language style and his local complex permeated in his works. The sixth chapter Fiction Rediscovery includes the rediscovery of the anecdotal and unknown works and the study of textual differences.
