Might may restrict human actions, while it has no power upon man's spirit .Literature is the spiritual output of human being's heart. Under the high-handed illegal rule of the Japanese in the years 1932-1945,the Northeastern area of China bore its own history of spirit, its unique experience on literary practice and way of creating literature, thus providing a different style of literature under the colonial rule. As a part of modem Chinese literature, the history of literature in the Northeast of China in the years 1932-1945 should be included in the study scope of Modem Chinese Literature.Based on the above mentioned ideas, "Literary Periodicals published in the Northeast of China in the years 1939-1945" is selected as the study point of the dissertation .The writer tries to achieve the following purposes: sketch out part of the literary vision of the Northeast during the period of Puppet Manchou State.bring to light some aspects of the literati's complicated spiritual state at that time, and reveal some truth of spiritual world at that abnormal space and time. The dissertation is divided into five chapters.Chapter One "Literature Had No Intention to Construct ' New Manchou'"It is a textural research and recounting on "New Manchou" , a comprehensive periodical on culture written in Chinese, which lasted the longest during the period of Puppet Manchou State. The writer first finds out the main trend of literature in the Northeast in the years 1939-1945.In this chapter, the writer described the policy of Puppet Manchou State on art and literature and its method to enforce such strategies, in order to reveal the context background where the periodical strived to live on, and meanwhile provide the basic factors for the whole dissertation to put forward its discussion. After doing careful study on the 7 years that "New Manchou " had experienced under such circumstances, the dissertation reveals the real management strategy of this periodical. Under the tough suppression and mighty rule of the illegitimate government, "New Manchou" had to keep its existence and maintain its dignity as a periodical. By using literature, the periodical abided by the government's art and literature policy but did no cooperation with it. Driven by attitudes that combined compromise with struggle, the literary works published in the periodical contributed to modern Chinese literature in the following ways : popular literature carried the literary spirit to create new literary forms; and women's literature provided new literary experience.Chapter Two "Imagine on Pure Literature"It is a textural research and recounting on such literary periodicals as "Art and Literature Record", "Selection", "Literary Style "."Poetry Season"and "Literature Publishing Union",aiming to describe the development of new literature in the Northeast during the period of Puppet Manchou State and set off discussion on individual writer's spiritual issues which lay in their literary works. Then the development of poetry in the current literary field is shown on the base of the writer's research on "Poetry Season",which was the only magazine on poetry written in Chinese. These magazines on pure ait and literature had to stop publishing after only two or three issues, but the literary works which represented the true spirit of the hterati were kept on, showing the writers' literary dreams and social hopes, making a true record of the writers' individual spiritual strength and struggle when they were not willing to go along with the evil trend of the hard times.Chapter Three "Vision on Popular literature"It is a textural research and recounting on "Kylin" , a light culture magazine, aiming to describe the development of popular literat...
