The research of the city culture and newspapering is a new field that covers city, culture and media. Strengthening this research is very important for promoting the urbanization process and deepening the research of city culture and media culture. Focusing on Chengdu and Chongqing, the typical cases of the new and old city relation in China, the research can also stimulate the Science of Regional Communication and Comparative Mass Communication. This thesis is only a try under the condition of limited relevant research. The thesis includes six parts: the Preface, the Process of City Urbanization and theNewspapers, the City Cultural Pattern and Newspapers-taking literature as center, theModern City Cultural Organization and Newspapers-taking the university as center, the Modern City Cultural Spirit and Newspapers-taking the identity consciousness ascenter and the Conclusion. The preface gives some detailed instructions of the significance, research background, method, relevant materials and the research difficulty.Chapter I: the Process of City Urbanization and the Newspapers. It gives a brief account of the modernization of Chongqing and Chengdu, as well as the development of the newspapers, shows the basic influence on the newspapers and city culture of political and economical conditions, and also tries to make a macroscopical research of the interactive relationship between city culture and newspapers. Chongqing and Chengdu, the most important two cities in western China, have undergone such complicated process. It's especially interesting to note the development of Chongqing: from a regional military and political center in east Sichuan, up to a goods gathering-and-dismissing center of the whole province, whose economical ability radiates the whole Sichuan and even the southwest ofChina; later, it become the secondary capital of Kuomingtung Government, capital of the southeast Region and a central-directly-governed city in the early time of P.R.China; though came back to a provincial-governed after 1954 but regained the position as a municipal directly under the Central Government in 1997. Different from Chongqing, the status of Chengdu is comparatively steady. As the political center of Sichuan in a long period, and the center of Han culture in southwest of China, Chengdu's image of a cultural and historical capital has been a target for Chongqing to concern, exclude, avoid and exceed. The relation between the two cities has become the direct factors that affect their development in different periods. Their mutual imitating and adjusting also left a deep mark in the development of media of the two cities. This chapter includes "The early stage of Chongqing and Chengdu's modern media and newspapers (1897-1937)", "the cultural changes and the development of Chongqing after anti-Japanese war(1937-1949)","the city and the simple political newspapers during the political . period(1949-1978)","the development of chengdu and the glory of newspapers" and "the development of the newspaper after Chongqing regained the position as a municipal directly under the Central Government".Chapter II: the City Cultural Pattern and Newspapers-taking literature as center. Imake some practical research of the relation between city culture pattern literature and newspapers. Literature is then the main content of newspaper, while newspapers offer space for the development of literature. Especially in the Anti-Japanese War Period, as Sichuan became the base of the revival of the whole nation and Chongqing became the culture center as well as capital, the literature garden of newspaper in both Chongqing and Chengdu burst into bright blossoms. Since 1990s, in pace with the formation of citizen society and the mass culture, the traditional, pure literature gradually changed in newspapers. The traditional newspaper literature gradually came in a popular style and some declined. In the 20th century the newspaper in Chengdu and Chongqing cultivated lots of writers and poets, heavyweight of which are LiJieren and LiuShahe. Of course, newspaper al...
